(Excerpts from Wikipedia) “This Present Darkness was Frank E. Peretti’s first published novel for adults and shows contemporary views on angels, demons, prayer, and spiritual warfare as demons and angels interact and struggle for control of the citizens of the small town of Ashton.
“For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.” – Ephesians 6:12
“Piercing the Darkness, which was published in 1988, is a sequel to This Present Darkness. The book, along with This Present Darkness, has been instrumental in promoting belief among Christians in Territorial Spirits. They have also increased an interest in spiritual warfare.”
Now, nearly thirty years later, the present darkness is much darker and Territorial Spirits have a much stronger hold on towns, villages, cities, regions and nations. And the church is no closer to being God’s instrument for piercing the darkness.
There is only one weapon for piercing the darkness. Jesus identified it:
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.”– Matthew 5:14-15
Jesus was speaking to and about His disciples—not individuals, but the total embodiment of His people in any place. He compared them (and us) to “a city set on a hill” that “cannot be hidden.”
“This little light of mine” may keep me as an individual relatively free of demons. I may even be able to chase demons from some individuals. But, “this little light of mine” is no match for the Territorial Spirits rampant in the earth today. The prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience, will never be controlled by legislation or by individual Christians.
The church needs to take ownership of the darkness, for failure to be the city set on a hill that cannot be hidden. The light of the world, the city within cities, is hidden under many baskets—each basket unique and with its own culture and distinctives.
Can you imagine the glorious brightness that will light up the sky over our cities when the baskets are cast off and the demons are cast out? “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
